Synopsis

Listening is an essential language skill that plays an important role in students’ learning, communication, and comprehension. The present study was undertaken to examine the effect of interactive teaching strategies on the listening skills of elementary students learning Urdu as a second language in English-medium schools. The study was conducted among Grade VII students in English-medium schools in Hyderabad. A quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pre-test-post-test design was adopted. The sample consisted of 60 students, with 30 students in the experimental group and 30 students in the control group, including an equal number of boys and girls in each group. A researcher-developed Listening Skills Assessment Test was used to assess students’ Urdu listening comprehension. The experimental group was taught through interactive teaching strategies using PowerPoint-based multimedia presentations incorporating audio, visual and animated materials, while the control group was taught through traditional teaching methods. Pre-test and post-test data were collected and analysed using descriptive statistics and independent-samples t-tests. The results showed that the experimental group obtained a higher post-test mean score (M = 52.9, SD = 2.63) than the control group (M = 46.7, SD = 2.73). The difference between the two groups was statistically significant, t(58) = 8.91, p < .001, with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.30). Significant differences were also observed in the comparisons of boys and girls across the experimental and control groups. The findings indicate that interactive teaching strategies were effective in improving the Urdu listening skills of Grade VII students. The study highlights the potential of interactive and multimedia-supported teaching practices for promoting effective language learning among elementary students.
